Huckabee is going to kill the GOP and the conservatives will not forget.
Huckabee will win a few more states, but they are all regional. He won't place outside of the south and that kills his chances.
Romney needs Huckabee and Huckabee needs Romney. Conservatives need them both. Religion is the only true dividing line between these two and this is not a vote for pope, for heaven's sake.
If Huckabee were smart he'd do the following:
1. Put the GOP before the me. Take the microphone and say he has spoken with Mitt Romney and has agreed to form a conservative alliance. Mitt needs a VP and he has put me on the short list (meaning he has got the spot). I would like to run again for President, but it is more important that we get the party together right now. I will use the next 8 years to solidify my support and get national experience. I have reassured myself for my supporters that Mitt will listen to Evangelicals and their concerns, despite our differing beliefs on what makes a person a Christian.
2. Clarify that John McCain is not the candidate for conservatives. He is a man who left his first wife and almost joined the Democratic Party. He is as far to the left of the party that he is hardly recognizable to the conservative base. McCain would seek Crist as his running mate, so I choose Mitt Romney, because he has promised me that he will stand firm on the issues important to me and will team up with me as we move forward to the White House.
3. Apologize to Mormons. You don't need to adopt their religion, but you do need to make amends. You used religion to smear Romney and that isn't fair on any front. Say to the Mormons that if you came across as Anti-Mormon, it was not intentional and that you have a great respect for the way they live their lives despite having great theological differences. You are ok with that and you hope that they are okay with supporting an Evangelical who shares their core values, but not their religious beliefs. That we need to bridge the political differences in order to unite the party and show an increased level of understanding towards all within the political party. We don't need to check our religion at the door because it is what makes us who we are, but we also shouldn't use religion as a way to knock each other around.
4. Ask that the conservative radio folks understand how hard it is to take a half-step down when you are in the heat of the battle and get on as many radio talk shows as possible to preach the unification of the party.
Mr. Huckabee: You have great power right now and the ability to unify the party. Super Tuesday will come and go. Take your strength and make something with it.
If you push this, you may end up on a very losing ticket with Mr. McCain and lose the national election badly to Clinton or Obama.
If that happens, you will be a footnote in the GOP history, only to be spoken of when others try to split the base at the cost of the nomination and White House.
GOP before Me. That needs to be your motto.
You will then have a very clear shot for the White House in four or eight years, e.g., Bob Dole, Bush, etc.
Do the right thing Mr. Huckabee before it is too late.
McCain, Huckabee Worst Picks for Evangelicals

"After careful and prayerful consideration, I have concluded that an evangelical vote for Mike Huckabee is a vote for John McCain, and a vote for John McCain will be a disaster for this country.
"Let me explain. It's clear to me and many others that Mike Huckabee is not broadening his appeal enough to win the primary. Therefore, his only contribution is to siphon off votes, giving McCain a clear path to victory. It's very possible Huckabee is being positioned to be John McCain's pick for vice president. In order to win, McCain needs Mike Huckabee and the evangelical votes he brings with him. The specter of a McCain-Huckabee ticket is bad for evangelicals.
"McCain is proud of his signature accomplishment, the McCain-Feingold law co-authored with liberal Democrat senator Russ Feingold. McCain-Feingold severely limits the First Amendment rights of evangelicals. McCain will use this law as the litmus test for his Supreme Court nominees. If a judge is likely to be against McCain's unconstitutional law, McCain will not nominate him. Make no mistake about it, constitutional originalist judges will be against McCain-Feingold. These same judges will also be pro-life, for traditional marriage and for the public acknowledgment of God.
"Only liberal judges will support McCain-Feingold. They will also be pro-abortion, anti-traditional marriage and against the public acknowledgement of God. So, with a McCain-Huckabee administration, or with a McCain-anyone administration, we get the wrong judges.
